GameStop is planning to close more stores in the United States following a 20 percent drop in net sales. The company has already closed nearly 300 locations last year and is conducting a store optimization review to finalize which specific stores will shut down. GameStop's struggles are attributed to the shift towards digital downloads and online shopping in the gaming industry. The retailer also plans to scale back operations in Germany and Italy after closing stores in Ireland, Austria, and Switzerland in 2023. The closure spree affecting the U.S. economy has seen nearly 2,600 stores shut down in the first four months of 2024, with projections suggesting up to 8,000 closures by the end of the year.
