The Metro Richmond Zoo in Moseley, Virginia, has named a female baby pygmy hippo born on Dec. 9 Poppy after a public vote. Poppy won with 52.8% of the vote, beating out the name Hammie Mae. The baby hippo, born to parents Iris and Corwin, is the third calf born at the zoo in the last four-and-a-half years. Pygmy hippos are an endangered species native to West Africa, with less than 2,500 mature individuals remaining in the wild.
