Alico Inc., a major citrus grower in Florida, announced plans to wind down its citrus operations due to challenges from hurricanes and tree diseases. The company will transition about 3,400 citrus acres to third-party caretakers through 2026. A quarter of its land holdings will be considered for potential commercial or residential development. Alico cited a 73% decline in citrus production over the past decade and deemed citrus growing economically unviable in Florida. The company expects to reduce its workforce and has informed juice producer Tropicana of its decision. Florida's citrus production has been declining due to disease and weather challenges, with the latest forecast predicting a 20% drop for the upcoming season.
