In 2023, Black women in the U.S. experienced a maternal death rate nearly 3.5 times higher than white women, despite an overall decrease in maternal mortality rates. The CDC's report revealed that the maternal death rate for white women dropped to 14.5 per 100,000 live births, while the rate for Black women remained above 50. The report also highlighted a decrease in maternal deaths for Hispanic and Asian American women. Factors contributing to maternal deaths included excessive bleeding, blood vessel blockages, infections, and the impact of COVID-19 on pregnant women. The expansion of federal Medicaid coverage for postpartum care up to 12 months was cited as a positive development in improving maternal health outcomes.
