A new animation released by the NASA-funded Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) shows the path of a 130- to 300-foot-wide asteroid named 2024 YR4, which has a small chance of impacting Earth on Dec. 22, 2032. While the probability of impact is currently above 1%, there is still a nearly 99% chance that the asteroid will not hit Earth. The asteroid is rated at Torino Scale 3, indicating a significant risk, and is on the risk list due to a gradual increase in impact probability since its discovery. The asteroid's size estimate is based on brightness measurements, and further observations may change the analysis as more data is gathered. NASA reports a 0% chance of impact on the asteroid's next orbit in 2028, but it may come close enough for additional observations.
