The head of the U.N. AIDS agency warned that new HIV infections could increase significantly by 2029 if American support for the largest AIDS program is withdrawn. Without this support, millions of people could die, and more drug-resistant strains of the disease could emerge. Despite a recent decline in HIV infections, with only 1.3 million new cases in 2023, the potential loss of funding could reverse this progress and lead to a devastating increase in infections.
