The song marked a turning point in Styx's history, with creative differences leading to singer Dennis DeYoung's departure. Shaw found renewed interest in performing the song after hearing a cover that presented it as a rock song, leading to its return to the band's setlist in 2018. Lawrence Gowan, who joined Styx later, supported the decision to include "Mr. Roboto" in their performances, citing its cultural relevance and predicting nature. Styx recently completed a residency in Las Vegas and will embark on the Brotherhood of Rock tour in May.
