A federal judge in Los Angeles ruled that Mariah Carey did not steal her hit song “All I Want for Christmas Is You” from other songwriters. The judge granted Carey’s request for summary judgment, dismissing a $20 million lawsuit filed by songwriters Andy Stone and Troy Powers. The judge found that the plaintiffs did not prove that Carey’s song infringed on their copyright, as the songs were not substantially similar. The judge also ordered sanctions against the plaintiffs and their lawyers for filing a frivolous lawsuit. Carey’s Christmas hit has been a chart-topper for years and continues to be a holiday favorite.
