Residents in Eugene were surprised to see a Funnel Cloud descending over the city without any Severe Thunderstorm or Tornado Warnings in effect. Chief Meteorologist John Mayer explained that the Funnel Cloud was actually a Cold Air Funnel, which forms from colder air descending and rotating above the cloud layer. These funnels have lighter wind speeds and typically only last for a few minutes before dissipating. While Funnel Clouds are rare in Southwest Oregon, Cold Air Funnels are more common during the Spring and Fall, often going unnoticed without eyewitness accounts. Viewers are encouraged to share any sightings through Chime In for a chance to have their pictures featured on-air and online.
