"Protecting Rights: Navigating Immigration Challenges for Palestinian and Muslim Students"
[!CDATA[The Rutgers Law School Center on Security, Race and Rights recently organized seminars to provide guidance to Palestinian and Muslim students on navigating federal immigration authorities and avoiding deportation from the United States. These "Know Your Rights" seminars were held in response to the Trump administration's increased scrutiny of international students involved in anti-Israel activities. The center is currently facing congressional scrutiny for alleged antisemitism and support for terrorism. The seminars focused on digital security measures, such as disabling Face ID and thumbprint ID on smartphones and setting strong passcodes to prevent access by federal agents. During the seminars, speakers emphasized the importance of protecting personal electronic devices from forensic tools used by authorities at airports and border checkpoints to access deleted content. Raquel Aldana from the University of California-Davis advised attendees that universities should not collaborate with ICE and should clearly define private spaces within campuses to help students avoid interactions with immigration enforcement agents. Rutgers University, which receives significant federal funding, could potentially jeopardize its funding due to hosting these events. While Rutgers has not yet been targeted by the federal government, it is among the schools under investigation by the Department of Education for antisemitism. The Center on Security, Race and Rights, led by Palestinian-American activist Sahar Aziz, offers courses on Islamophobia, critical race theory, and national security at Rutgers Law School. The center's funding comes from the Rutgers University chancellor's budget and the Rutgers University Foundation. Faculty advisers at the center have expressed support for Hamas and endorsed a 2023 terror attack on Israel, referring to Hamas fighters as "martyrs" and praising the attack as "innovative" and "astounding." In light of these developments, it is essential for students to be aware of their rights and take necessary precautions to protect their privacy and security. The seminars organized by the Rutgers Law School Center on Security, Race and Rights serve as a resource for Palestinian and Muslim students facing immigration challenges in the current political climate. It is crucial for educational institutions to uphold principles of inclusivity and respect while navigating complex issues related to national security and immigration enforcement.]]
