"Tracking Consumer Prices Under the Trump Administration: A Look at Egg, Milk, Bread, and Meat Costs"

[!CDATA[It has been over 100 days since President Donald Trump began his term, and while egg prices have finally started to drop, the cost of other consumer goods remains high. Ground beef prices hit a record high in April, reaching $6 per pound, while electricity costs also remained elevated. On the bright side, egg prices have decreased by about 18% from March, settling at $5.12 in April. Despite the change in administration, the prices of milk, bread, and chicken have seen minimal fluctuations since December. The Tribune is monitoring the prices of 11 everyday items, including eggs, milk, bread, bananas, oranges, tomatoes, chicken, ground beef, gasoline, electricity, and natural gas, to track any changes under the current administration. Egg prices have dropped for the first time in months, with the average cost of a dozen large Grade A eggs falling to $5.12 in April. This decrease is attributed to a decline in bird flu cases in commercial and backyard flocks. While egg prices are still higher than before Trump took office, experts anticipate further drops as bird flu cases decrease. Milk prices have seen a slight increase, with a gallon of fortified whole milk costing around $4.07 in April. White bread prices have remained relatively stable, while bananas have maintained a low price of $0.64 per pound. Orange prices are expected to rise as the harvesting season ends, following the typical market trend for citrus fruits. The cost of field-grown tomatoes decreased slightly in April, while the price of fresh, whole chicken has remained steady at $2.06 per pound. Ground beef prices, however, have reached an all-time high of $6.00 per pound, driven by factors such as ground beef recalls, low cattle inventory, and drought conditions. Electricity prices have stayed consistent at 18 cents per kilowatt-hour, marking the highest recorded cost in over 45 years. Gas prices have increased to $3.33 per gallon of regular unleaded, but remain lower than they were in April 2024. Natural gas prices have also risen to $1.63 per therm, the highest in two years. In conclusion, while some prices have seen fluctuations, others have remained relatively stable under the current administration. The impact of global trade wars and other external factors may continue to influence the prices of everyday goods for Americans.]]
