NFL and ICRG Collaborate to Address College Athletes' Gambling Risks

The National Football League (NFL) has joined forces with the International Center for Responsible Gaming (ICRG) to address the growing concerns surrounding gambling behaviors among college athletes and students. The NFL Foundation will provide $600,000 over the next three years to support independent research studies focusing on the prevalence, risk factors, and impacts of gambling within these high-risk populations. This collaboration underscores the NFL's commitment to tackling the challenges of sports betting and promoting responsible gambling practices.
Research indicates that college athletes may be particularly vulnerable to gambling issues, but there is a lack of comprehensive data on how college populations engage with online sports betting platforms. The initiative will enable researchers to explore behavioral patterns associated with gambling and its broader social and academic impacts. The goal is to develop evidence-based prevention strategies, educational materials, and policies to address gambling-related harm effectively.
The NFL and ICRG aim to gain deeper insights into the specific risks faced by college students, who are increasingly exposed to online sports betting. By funding this research, the NFL seeks to enhance understanding and create evidence-based approaches to prevent gambling issues from escalating. The Independent Scientific Advisory Board of the ICRG will review grant applications to ensure the research is scientifically rigorous and unbiased. This initiative aligns with the NFL's commitment to promoting responsible gambling and creating a safe environment for athletes, fans, and communities.
In addition to supporting research, the NFL will assist in updating the ICRG's "Talking with Children About Gambling" educational program. This program aims to equip parents, coaches, and educators with tools to educate young people about the risks of gambling before they reach college. The updated materials will be widely available online and distributed to schools, community sports organizations, and youth programs nationwide. The goal is to raise awareness among young audiences about the dangers of gambling and encourage responsible decision-making.
The partnership with the ICRG builds on the NFL's previous efforts to promote responsible gambling since the legalization of sports betting outside Nevada in 2018. The NFL has collaborated with organizations like the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) and the Responsible Gambling Council (RGC) to implement educational programs and provide resources to athletes and fans. The league has also made significant financial contributions, including a $6.4 million donation to the NCPG in 2023, supporting problem gambling helplines, awareness campaigns, and grants for underserved communities.
With the expansion of sports betting in the U.S. and Canada, the NFL's proactive approach underscores its role in safeguarding the well-being of players, fans, and future generations. The partnership with the ICRG is a crucial step in addressing the gambling risks faced by college athletes, who may be particularly susceptible due to their close ties to the sports industry. This collaboration reflects the NFL's ongoing commitment to promoting responsible gambling practices and ensuring the safety of all stakeholders.
