Reunited: A Sailor's Journey to Bring His Beloved Dog Home

A US Navy sailor returned home from an eight-month deployment to find out that his beloved dog, Archie, had been given away by a family member who was supposed to care for him. Paulo Silva, a sailor from Freehold, NJ, described Archie as his companion and a piece of his soul. Silva's bond with Archie was irreplaceable, having been through everything together.

Silva had been deployed on the USS Harry S. Truman during a mission to the Middle East, where the aircraft carrier faced attacks and fired over 1.1 million pounds of ordnance. Despite regularly checking in with family during his deployment, Silva was never informed about Archie's struggles in the new environment. The relative who gave Archie away claimed they had no choice.

Upon his return on June 1, Silva launched a search for Archie and asked for help on social media to locate the man who took in the dog. With the assistance of Toms River and Monmouth County police, a veterans group, and Facebook, Archie was located and safely returned to Silva. A golden retriever breeder even offered to donate a puppy to the family who cared for Archie during his absence.

Silva expressed gratitude for the support and love shown during Archie's return. He emphasized the importance of civility and respect, asking his supporters to refrain from harassing or threatening the family who gave Archie away. Silva urged everyone to move forward with kindness and understanding for the sake of all involved, especially Archie.
