Pressure Mounts on Local Democratic Leaders to Endorse Governor Hochul: Tensions Rise Ahead of Primary Election

The New York State Democratic committee is reportedly pressuring local party leaders to endorse Governor Kathy Hochul, who is facing a primary challenge from Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado. State Committee Chair Jay Jacobs is said to be using state committee funding as leverage to get county committee chairs to sign a letter expressing support for Hochul. Some chairs are uncomfortable with this tactic and feel it is an attempt to consolidate support for the governor.
Jacobs has confirmed that 49 out of 61 county leaders, including all New York City chairs, will be endorsing Hochul in the letter. However, he denies that this endorsement is tied to funding decisions. Some county chairs have expressed their discomfort with being asked to endorse Hochul, as they believe it is an effort to rally behind an unpopular governor without considering the local elections in 2025.
County Democratic chairs like Zak Constantine from Orange County and Caitlin Ogden from Otsego County have voiced their concerns about the pressure to endorse Hochul early in the primary election process. They emphasize the importance of allowing a democratic process where candidates can make their arguments and voters can express their preferences. They believe that New York should learn from past experiences and not rush to support a candidate without proper consideration.
Governor Hochul's campaign has not yet responded to requests for comment. The situation highlights the tensions within the Democratic party in New York as local leaders navigate their support for candidates in the upcoming primary election.
