Ballerina: From Ultra-Violent Script to Action-Packed Spinoff

The Ballerina movie, originally a standalone ultra-violent script by Shay Hatten, gained attention for its high body count and intense action scenes. The script, which featured a character named Rooney, included a brutal scene in an old people's home where she dispatched 200 elderly individuals as part of her mission to avenge her family. The original script had a staggering body count of 1400, showcasing the character's ruthless nature.
Despite its origins as a standalone project, Ballerina caught the eye of Lionsgate, the studio behind the John Wick franchise. They brought Hatten on board to work on scripts for two John Wick sequels and eventually turned Ballerina into a spinoff movie. Director Len Wiseman was impressed by Hatten's script and worked on refining the story for the film adaptation, although some elements, like the old people's home scene, were eventually altered.
While the idea of a movie with a body count of over 1400 may have been intriguing, Wiseman and the team decided to tone down the violence to maintain a level of believability. The original script's extreme carnage would have pushed the boundaries of realism and potentially alienated audiences. By reducing the death toll to a more manageable level, the filmmakers aimed to strike a balance between action-packed entertainment and narrative coherence.
