Tragic Fire in Reims: Battery-Powered Scooter Causes Fatal Blaze in Housing Block

A tragic fire broke out in a 10-story housing block in Reims, the capital of France's Champagne region, resulting in the deaths of four individuals. The fire, believed to have been caused by a battery-powered electric scooter, started in a 4th-floor apartment in the early hours of Friday. A 13-year-old boy jumped from the apartment, while his older brother, aged 15, is presumed to have perished in the fire. An 87-year-old woman and her 59-year-old son on the 8th floor died from smoke inhalation.

The fire also left two individuals seriously injured, including the boys' stepfather, who suffered severe burns. Additionally, 26 people were treated for minor injuries at the hospital. The prosecutor confirmed that the fire was accidental and originated from the scooter, which ignited for unknown reasons. Firefighters faced challenges extinguishing the blaze due to the nature of battery fires, which are notoriously difficult to put out.

The devastating incident serves as a reminder of the dangers associated with battery-powered devices and the importance of fire safety measures in residential buildings. Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of the victims during this difficult time.
