Usha Vance's Camp VPR: A New Tradition Promoting Literacy and Outdoor Fun
Usha Vance, the second lady, is introducing a new tradition by hosting Camp VPR at the vice president's residence, Number One Observatory Circle. The event welcomed over 200 children for a day of outdoor activities and fun. Usha Vance plans to make this an annual tradition to encourage kids to explore the outdoors, learn new things, and have a good time.
At Camp VPR, children participated in various arts and crafts activities like bracelet making, rock painting, tie-dying, and face painting. They also enjoyed moon bounces, water slides, and music from the U.S. Navy Band Cruisers. Each child left with a book and was encouraged to participate in the Second Lady's Summer Reading Challenge, where they can read 12 books of their choice to earn a certificate and a prize.
Usha Vance initiated the Summer Reading Challenge to address declining childhood literacy rates. She aims to make a positive impact by encouraging children to read more and engage in educational activities. Despite the challenges in literacy rates, Usha Vance is determined to use her platform to make a difference and hopes to expand these initiatives in the future.
As the first second lady with young children living at the vice president's residence, Usha Vance is also the first Indian American second lady. She has been actively involved in various events and trips, both domestically and internationally, accompanying her husband on official visits. Usha Vance's efforts to promote literacy and engage children in educational activities demonstrate her commitment to making a positive impact in the community.
