Kim Novak to Receive Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at Venice Film Festival

The Venice Film Festival is set to pay tribute to the iconic actress Kim Novak by awarding her with a Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement. Novak, who rose to fame in the late '50s and early '60s with memorable roles in classic films like "Vertigo," "Picnic," "The Man with the Golden Arm," and "Pal Joey," became a top box office draw during that era. Known for her rebellious spirit and independence, Novak eventually retired from Hollywood to focus on painting and her love for horses on her Oregon ranch.
As part of the tribute, the festival will premiere a documentary biopic titled "Kim Novak's Vertigo," directed and written by Alexandre O. Philippe. The film will offer a glimpse into Novak's life, blending archival footage with personal reflections from the actress herself. Novak's journey from a cinema icon to a private artist living along Oregon's Rogue River will be explored in the documentary, highlighting her unique path in the film industry.
Venice chief Alberto Barbera praised Novak for her defiance against the studio system and her unwavering commitment to living life on her own terms. Novak's refusal to conform to Hollywood's standards, including changing her name to avoid being associated with Marilyn Monroe, showcased her determination to maintain her identity and independence. Novak expressed her gratitude for receiving the prestigious Golden Lion Award, stating that it is a dream come true to be recognized for her body of work at this stage in her life.
In addition to honoring Kim Novak, the Venice Film Festival will also present a lifetime achievement award to German director Werner Herzog during its 82nd edition. The festival, scheduled to take place from August 27 to September 6, will celebrate the contributions of these legendary figures in the world of cinema, showcasing their enduring impact on the film industry.
