Tracking Tropical Storms and Severe Weather: Updates on Hurricane Season and Hailstorm Research

The Atlantic hurricane basin is currently quiet as the second week of hurricane season begins. However, the Eastern Pacific Ocean has seen the formation of the third storm of the season, Tropical Storm Cosme, located west of Mexico. Another storm, Tropical Storm Barbara, is also active in the region and is expected to become a hurricane soon. The National Hurricane Center has issued warnings for potential heavy rainfall and flooding in coastal states of Mexico due to these storms.
In the United States, severe weather has been reported, with multiple tornadoes touching down from Texas to Virginia. A tornado watch was in effect for the Washington D.C. area and parts of Virginia, where severe thunderstorms occurred. Hailstorms have also been reported in Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Illinois, causing damage and power outages in several states.
A team of over 100 researchers is conducting field research for a project called ICECHIP, supported by the National Science Foundation, to study hailstorms in the Plains region. This collaborative project aims to advance understanding of hail and its impact, marking a significant step forward in hail research in the United States.
As the hurricane season progresses and severe weather events continue to impact different regions, it is crucial to stay informed and prepared for potential risks. Stay updated on weather forecasts and warnings to ensure safety during extreme weather conditions.
