Crafting the Enchanting Ballad: The Making of "Down the Witches’ Road" for "Agatha All Along
The showrunner of "Agatha All Along," Jac Schaeffer, enlisted the help of songwriters Bobby Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez to create a pivotal song for the show called "Down the Witches’ Road." This song needed to incorporate specific thematic elements related to fire, earth, water, air, and the road. The limited series follows Agatha, played by Kathryn Hahn, as she forms her own coven to regain her powers after the events of "WandaVision." The song serves as an instruction manual for navigating the Witches’ Road, leading Agatha's coven through challenging trials to attain their deepest desires.
Lopez and Anderson-Lopez crafted eight different versions of the song, each containing crucial lyrical information. The first version, sung by witch Lorna Wu, exuded Stevie Nicks vibes and required a pop ballad, heartbreak feel. The Chant Version, which involved all actors singing harmonies, explained that the Witches’ Road is revealed when a coven sings it. Drawing from personal experiences, the songwriters infused the song with elements of ritualistic singing and community bonding, creating a magical and powerful musical experience.
As the various versions of the song came together, Anderson-Lopez and Lopez ensured that each version had its unique essence, from the Chant Version to the early American folk song and the simple chant. The heart of the song was meant to evoke a mother singing with her child as they skipped down the road, setting the tone for all iterations of the song. The duo was present on set as the actors performed the ballad, with Hahn impressing Lopez with her fierce and intense singing, and Anderson-Lopez fulfilling a dream by hearing Broadway legend LuPone sing their lyrics.
While Anderson-Lopez cherished the moment of having LuPone sing their lyrics, she expressed a hope that the witchy ballad would inspire others, even dreaming of a recording by Stevie Nicks. The creation of "Down the Witches’ Road" was a collaborative and magical process that brought together music, storytelling, and performance to enhance the mystical world of "Agatha All Along."
