Shane Van Gisbergen Triumphs in Historic NASCAR Mexico City Race

Shane Van Gisbergen showcased his driving prowess once again by clinching victory at the Mexico City road course, marking NASCAR's first Cup Series points-paying race outside the United States in the modern era. The New Zealander led 60 of the 100 laps at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, securing his first Cup win since his debut in the 2023 street course race in Chicago. This win propelled him to a full-time move to NASCAR after a successful stint in the Australia V8 Supercars series. Despite a challenging season, Van Gisbergen's triumph in Mexico City secured him a spot in NASCAR's playoffs, offering him a shot at the Cup Series championship.

Van Gisbergen's victory was aided by his exceptional skills on wet surfaces, as he capitalized on an early rain shower during the race. Starting from the pole position, he fended off competitors like Ty Gibbs and Christopher Bell to claim the lead with 31 laps remaining. The win not only solidified his playoff berth but also highlighted his potential as a top contender in NASCAR's premier series.

Trackhouse Racing saw two of its drivers, Ross Chastain and Van Gisbergen, secure playoff spots, showcasing the team's growing competitiveness in the Cup Series. However, it was a bittersweet outcome for Daniel Suarez, who failed to challenge his teammate for the win and finished 19th. Despite the disappointment, Suarez's emotional connection to the event as a Mexican driver added a poignant touch to the race.

In a race dominated by Chevrolets, Bell finished second in a Toyota, followed by Chase Elliott in a Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. Alex Bowman overcame back pain to secure a fourth-place finish, while Michael McDowell and John Hunter Nemechek rounded out the top five. The race also saw Kyle Busch suffer a setback, crashing out early and finishing last in the field due to challenging wet track conditions.

As NASCAR ventured outside the U.S. for the first time in decades, the Mexico City race provided a unique and thrilling experience for fans and drivers alike. With the next race scheduled at Pocono Raceway, the competition is set to intensify as drivers aim to secure valuable points in the championship standings.
