Colorifix: Revolutionizing Sustainable Dye Production with DNA Sequencing and Natural Colors

The Prince of Wales made a visit to Norwich with actress and Earthshot Prize Council member, Cate Blanchett, to meet with Colorifix, a UK-based biotechnology company that produces sustainable dye for clothing. During the visit, they toured the company's laboratories and learned about the dye process, including how Colorifix identifies the DNA code for pigment and attaches the dye to fabric to save water, energy, and carbon emissions.

Colorifix, a 2023 Earthshot Prize Finalist in the Build a Waste Free World category, uses DNA sequencing and natural colors to create sustainable dyes that reduce the fashion industry's water and chemical usage. By identifying colors from animals, plants, or microbes and using DNA sequencing to code them into safe microbes for fermentation, Colorifix produces dyes that can be used on various fabrics without added petrochemicals.

The company has partnered with well-known fashion brands like H&M, Pangaia, and Vollebak and has grown to employ 85 people since its establishment in 2016. Prince William, a strong advocate for environmental conservation, launched the Earthshot Prize in 2020 with the goal of achieving five environmental targets by 2030. The Prize awards £1 million to five winners each year to support their innovative work in addressing environmental challenges.

Prince William's dedication to the planet's well-being is inspired by his grandfather, Prince Philip, and his father, King Charles. He aims to make a positive impact in the fight against climate change and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come. The Earthshot Prize reflects his commitment to addressing the urgent environmental issues facing the world today and the need for collective action to protect the planet.
