Rev Up for the SoHo Soaper: A Soapbox Racing Event Celebrating Community Spirit in London
The SoHo Community Association in London is hosting the SoHo Soaper, a soapbox racing event that aims to bring the neighborhood together. Soapbox racing has a rich history dating back to the early 1900s in Dayton, Ohio, where kids built carts from wooden soap crates. Today, racers still construct their own carts and compete on downhill courses without the use of motors. While soapbox derbies are more common in the U.S., events in Windsor-Essex and Ancaster help keep the sport alive in Ontario.
The SoHo Community Association, established in June last year, is a volunteer-led group dedicated to fostering connections among neighbors and promoting the community. Chair Mark Thomas views the race as an opportunity to showcase SoHo's unique spirit and encourage hands-on learning among youth. The event will feature 35 carts racing down South Street, with time trials leading to tournament-style eliminations and trophies awarded to winners in different age groups.
Participants pay an entry fee to race, with the option to purchase pre-made kits containing essential components for building a cart. The event welcomes spectators to enjoy the races and vote for their favorite cart. Racers, both experienced and first-timers, will take on the course throughout the day, showcasing a variety of creative cart designs. The only rules for the race are that the carts must go downhill, have braking and steering capabilities, and the racers must wear helmets.
Father and son duo Barry and Gavin Beckles, known as team Turbo Stars, are gearing up for the event by making final adjustments to their cart. Gavin, 10, is excited to decorate their cart with a turbo symbol and stars, adding a personal touch to their racing experience. The event promises to be a fun-filled day for participants and spectators alike, celebrating creativity, community spirit, and friendly competition.
