Canterbury Park Cancels Sunday Horse Racing Due to High Heat Indexes

Canterbury Park has made the decision to cancel Sunday evening's horse racing due to the expected high heat indexes exceeding 105. The previous day, racing was also called off due to a heat index of 109 in Shakopee. Originally rescheduled to start at 1 pm, Sunday's program was moved to 5 pm, but the forecast still predicts dangerous heat levels throughout the evening, leading to another cancellation.

General manager John Groen emphasized that the safety of everyone involved in the horse racing event, including jockeys, staff working outdoors, guests, and competing horses, is their top priority. The three $50,000 stakes races that were scheduled for Saturday, including the Canterbury Derby, Lady Canterbury, and Brooks Fields, will now take place on Saturday, June 28. Officials are also planning to schedule a make-up date on Wednesday, July 2, pending approval from the executive director of the Minnesota Racing Commission.

Additionally, the Basset Hound races that were part of the Pepsi Family Day activities have been rescheduled to Sunday, July 29. The decision to cancel the races was made in consideration of the well-being of all participants and to ensure a safe environment for everyone involved in the event.
