Chaos at Stadio Arechi: Sampdoria vs. Salernitana Match Abandoned Due to Fan Violence

A playoff match in Italy was disrupted and eventually called off due to fan violence at the Stadio Arechi. The game between Sampdoria and Salernitana was halted 65 minutes in as fans threw flares, firecrackers, and seats onto the pitch. Sampdoria was leading 2-0 in the match and 4-0 on aggregate before the chaos ensued. The angry Salernitana fans turned on their team as relegation loomed, leading to riot police intervention and the players being taken off the field.

Referee Daniele Doveri tried to resume the game after a ten-minute delay, but more flares were thrown onto the pitch, forcing the match to be abandoned. This would have been the first time in Sampdoria's history to face relegation to Serie C. Massimo Coda and Giuseppe Sibilli scored for Sampdoria, putting them in a strong position to avoid relegation. Salernitana only needed a draw on aggregate to secure their place in the league.

The fan anger escalated after a disallowed goal for offside and erupted further after Sibilli's goal early in the second half. The first leg of the playoff was marred by food poisoning, with eight Salernitana players hospitalized. The match was rescheduled from Friday to Sunday due to the incident. Reports indicated that many players fell ill after eating a meal prepared at the team's hotel, causing gastrointestinal problems and severe pain for 21 staff members.
