Countdown to Kickoff: TCU Horned Frogs Legend Spotlight - Davis
The TCU Horned Frogs are gearing up for the 2025 football season, which will kick off with a game against the North Carolina Tar Heels and their new head coach, Bill Belichick. Leading up to the season opener, we will feature a former or current Horned Frog whose jersey number corresponds to the number of days left until kickoff.
One standout player we are highlighting is Davis, who excelled on the defensive line for TCU in the early 1970s. Davis earned All-Southwest Conference honors in 1972 and 1973, and was named a Third-Team All-American in 1973. Following his college career, Davis was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the ninth round of the 1974 NFL Draft. He went on to play seven seasons in the NFL, recording 10.5 sacks and four fumble recoveries over 74 games.
During his time with the Steelers, Davis was part of the team that won Super Bowl IX in 1975, defeating the Minnesota Vikings. He later played for the St. Louis Cardinals and the Houston Oilers before retiring in 1980. Davis's contributions to TCU's football program were recognized when he was inducted into the TCU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999. He was also one of the first black student-athletes at TCU to graduate from the Neeley School of Business in 1974.
As we look forward to the upcoming football season, we celebrate the legacy of players like Davis who have left their mark on TCU's football history. Stay tuned as we continue to countdown to kickoff and honor more Horned Frog greats along the way.
