From Netflix to the Track: A Fan's Journey into the World of Formula One

Last spring, as I was nearing graduation from college, I suffered an ACL tear, leading me to seek a new interest. This quest led me to discover the world of Formula One through the docuseries "Drive to Survive" on Netflix. A year later, I found myself at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal with my dad, both sporting team hats. Thanks to tickets from one of my dad's colleagues, we embarked on a memorable trip to Canada last weekend, celebrating Father's Day with a weekend filled with race excitement, delicious food, and quality time together.

The Canadian Grand Prix was a thrilling experience, marked by dramatic moments like a teammate crash, a teenager's first podium, and the unfortunate demise of a groundhog on the track. Despite being a 24-year-old woman, I discovered that I was not alone in my newfound passion for motor sports. The sport has seen a significant increase in viewership and fandom, with women aged 16 to 24 emerging as the fastest-growing demographic of F1 fans. Social media platforms have played a crucial role in expanding the sport's popularity, with young women actively engaging in F1 content online.

The surge in F1's popularity can also be attributed to the success of media like "Drive to Survive" and podcasts like "Fan Behavior" and "The Red Flags Podcast." Additionally, the upcoming "F1" movie starring Brad Pitt is expected to attract more fans to the sport. While the appeal of attractive European drivers may draw in young women, many fans, including myself, are genuinely passionate about the sport, showcasing a deep knowledge of drivers, teams, and technical aspects of F1.

Attending an F1 race in person offers a unique and immersive experience that television broadcasts cannot capture fully. The weekend-long event includes practice sessions, qualifying rounds, and the main race on Sunday, along with supporting races like the F1 Academy series. My visit to the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal provided a firsthand look at the intense competition and excitement of F1 racing, complete with crashes, safety cars, and the deafening roar of the engines.

Watching the race from a premium box suite near the track's first corner allowed me to witness the drivers' skill and daring maneuvers up close. Despite the limited visibility of the track, screens in our seats provided additional coverage of the race. The presence of groundhogs on the track added a unique element to the event, with one unfortunate incident involving Lewis Hamilton running over a groundhog during the race.

One of the race's standout moments was a tense battle between McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, culminating in a collision that saw Norris hitting the wall. While the incident was disappointing for Norris and his fans, I was thrilled to witness the action from my vantage point. As a fan of Piastri, I was delighted to see him finish the race in fourth place, despite the intense competition on the track.

Throughout the weekend, I proudly supported my favorite driver, Piastri, while rooting for my favorite team, Mercedes. The experience of attending an F1 race in person deepened my appreciation for the sport and reinforced my passion for Formula One.
