Highlights of the 2025 Sheffield DocFest: Celebrating Outstanding Documentaries and Filmmakers
The Sheffield DocFest recently wrapped up its 32nd edition in England. Director Anastasiya Miroshnichenko’s Welded Together clinched the festival’s Grand Jury Award for the International Competition at the closing gala. The film was praised for its portrayal of resilience and strength in the face of alcoholism in Belarus. The festival showcased 51 world premieres from 68 countries and will continue its DocNights screening program in collaboration with Showroom Cinema.
The winners of the 2025 Sheffield DocFest include Welded Together by Anastasiya Miroshnichenko, which won the Grand Jury Award for the International Competition. In a Whisper by Catarina Gonçalves won the Grand Jury Award for the International Short Film Competition, and Oscurana by Violeta Mora received a Special Mention.
The festival also awarded the Tim Hetherington Award to Sudan, Remember Us by Hind Meddeb, the International Virtual Reality Competition to Speechless Witness of a Wandering Tree, the Youth Jury Award to Runa Simi by Augusto Zegarra, and the Shine Global Children’s Resilience Award for Documentary to Comparsa by Vickie Curtis and Doug Anderson. The Whickers Pitch, Film & TV Funding Award 2025 went to The Video Guy by Sam Howard and Alexander Dickerson, while the Podcast Pitch was won by Redemption Man by Chris Mitchell. The First Cut Pitch was awarded to Clio Symington, and the Climate Spring Pitch went to Michelle Sanders for Downstream. The Al Jazeera Documentary Channel Co-Production Award was given to Gaza Sunbirds and Power by Elaine McMillion Sheldon.
