Unveiling the Original Plan: Robert Rodriguez's Potential Role in Scream 2

Kevin Williamson, the original writer of the iconic horror film Scream, recently revealed some surprising details about the sequel, Scream 2. While Wes Craven, the creator of the franchise, ultimately directed the film, it was initially intended for another renowned horror filmmaker from the '90s, Robert Rodriguez. Williamson, who is now set to direct Scream 7, shared this insight during a discussion about his upcoming Netflix series, The Waterfront.
Originally, Williamson was slated to direct The Faculty, a movie he had reworked for Miramax. However, he opted to direct Teaching Mrs. Tingle instead. This decision led to Rodriguez being considered for the director's chair of Scream 2 before he went on to helm The Faculty. Despite this change in plans, Wes Craven ultimately directed Scream 2, which became a critical and commercial success, grossing over $172 million and earning an 82% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Had Rodriguez directed Scream 2, the film may have taken on a different tone, potentially leaning towards a campier style given his previous work on projects like From Dusk till Dawn. However, Craven's vision for the sequel proved to be a standout in the horror genre, solidifying its place as one of the best sequels ever made. While Rodriguez's unique filmmaking style shines in movies like The Faculty, Craven's direction ultimately elevated Scream 2 to classic status within the franchise.
