Jay Lane: A Drummer's Journey with Dead & Company and Primus

This weekend, Dead & Company will be performing three shows in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, celebrating 60 years of Grateful Dead music. Drummer Jay Lane, a veteran Bay Area musician, will be playing in front of over 60,000 fans each night. Lane, who joined Dead & Company in 2023, has a long history with Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir, having been a co-founding member of RatDog, Furthur, and Wolf Bros.
Despite not being a Deadhead initially, Lane's fresh perspective on the Grateful Dead's music caught Bob Weir's attention. Lane's journey with the band began when Weir tapped him for RatDog, leading him to appreciate the depth and improvisational nature of the Grateful Dead's music, particularly after listening to recordings of their Europe '72 tour.
Tickets for Dead & Company's shows in Golden Gate Park sold out quickly, with livestreams available for purchase. While the band's future beyond this weekend is uncertain, Lane remains open to the possibility of more shows if they call upon him. In the past, Lane was also a drummer for Primus and had a brief tenure in Furthur before rejoining Primus from 2010 to 2013.
Primus recently went through an extensive drummer search after Tim "Herb" Alexander's departure, ultimately selecting John Hoffman. Despite not being considered for the position, Lane's drumming style was often referenced by Les Claypool during the auditions as a standard to meet. The audition process was documented in Primus' Interstellar Drum Derby video series.
