Tragic Incident at JACK Thistledown Racino: Racehorse Fatally Injured, Races Canceled

A tragic incident occurred at JACK Thistledown Racino as a racehorse named Tayarra suffered a life-ending injury during Race #1. As a result, all live horse races have been canceled for Thursday, July 31, 2025. The incident occurred when Tayarra was leading the race but suffered a catastrophic injury on the backstretch of the track, leading to the decision to euthanize the horse.

Last week, races were canceled due to safety concerns raised by jockeys regarding the racing surface. The Ohio Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association organized a rock picking session to address the concerns, with approximately 50 people removing rocks from the track. Following testing by the Racing Surfaces Testing Laboratory over the weekend, races resumed on Monday, only for Tayarra to sustain a critical injury during the race.

Efforts are being made to determine the cause of Tayarra's injury and whether track conditions continue to be a concern. JACK Thistledown Racino and the HBPA have been contacted for further information on the incident.
