Unveiling Eddie Van Halen's Sonic World: A Recording Engineer's Journey with Guitar Legend
Recording engineer Ross Hogarth shares his experience working with guitar legend Eddie Van Halen on the album A Different Kind of Truth. When Hogarth entered Van Halen's 5150 studios, he quickly adapted to the guitarist's unique recording process, emphasizing the importance of immersing oneself in Van Halen's world. Van Halen's preference for recording single-tracked guitar parts with intricate nuances and squeals led to a distinctive sound that avoided the need for double-tracking.
Hogarth discovered ways to enhance Van Halen's sound by experimenting with microphone placement and gear choices. By utilizing two heads and two cabinets with Shure SM57 microphones, they achieved a broader stereo sound that added depth to the guitar tones. To address the lack of low-end frequencies captured by the SM57s, Hogarth introduced a tube-powered Royer R-122V ribbon mic, which enhanced the midrange frequencies and made the guitar sound more expressive.
During the recording process, Van Halen revisited his vintage gear, including his retired 1967/68 1959 Marshall Super Lead amp, to create a unique blend of tones. By combining different amplifiers and cabinets, they achieved a dynamic sound that showcased the versatility of Van Halen's playing style. Van Halen's intuitive understanding of the recording techniques and gear adjustments allowed him to quickly embrace the new sonic possibilities and elevate the album's overall sound quality.
In addition to Hogarth's contributions, Paul Reed Smith shared his experience of building a custom guitar for Van Halen, highlighting the guitarist's interest in exploring new instruments and sounds.
