Grateful Dead Movie Celebrates 60th Anniversary in IMAX Theaters Nationwide
The iconic 1977 concert film "The Grateful Dead Movie" is set to make its debut in 60 IMAX theaters nationwide to celebrate the band's 60th anniversary. Directed by Jerry Garcia and Leon Gast, the film captures the band's performances at San Francisco's Winterland Ballroom in 1974, showcasing their innovative "Wall of Sound" audio system.
Featuring interviews with band members and crew, the film offers a unique perspective on the Grateful Dead's music and legacy. Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux praised the IMAX screening as the best he has ever experienced, despite having seen the film countless times.
The screenings are part of the Dead's annual "Meet Up at the Movies" event, where fans can enjoy the band's concert films on the big screen. The film will premiere in select theaters on Aug. 13 before a wider release on Aug. 14, coinciding with the band's three-day concert at Golden Gate Park.
