Mel Owens Apologizes for Ageist Comments on 'Golden Bachelor' Season 2

Mel Owens, a contestant on "Golden Bachelor" Season 2, recently expressed regret for his previous comments regarding age limits for contestants on the dating reality show. In an interview with Glamour, Owens acknowledged that his remarks were insensitive and unfair, and he is determined to earn back the trust of those affected. He emphasized the need to make amends for his comments and expressed his commitment to doing so throughout his time on the show.
During a podcast appearance in June, Owens had stated that he would eliminate any woman over the age of 60 and advised producers against casting individuals with "artificial hips" or "wigs." He explained that he had initially mentioned a preference for contestants aged 45 to 60, but later clarified his stance during a lunch with the executive producer. Owens also emphasized the importance of physical fitness among contestants, highlighting his own dedication to staying in shape.
Despite his initial comments, Owens expressed his belief in the presence of remarkable women and outlined his criteria for a potential partner, emphasizing qualities such as being a lifelong learner, enjoying life, staying fit, and having a positive outlook. He further revealed that he apologized to the contestants during the filming of "The Golden Bachelor," acknowledging the unfairness and insensitivity of his previous statements and seeking to earn back their trust.
Owens, who was announced as the Golden Bachelor for Season 2 in April, follows Gerry Turner in the role. Turner had chosen Theresa Nist as the winner of the show's first season, and the couple married in a televised ABC special in January 2024 before later announcing their divorce. The upcoming season of "Golden Bachelor" is scheduled to premiere on Sept. 24 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC, featuring Mel Owens as the new Golden Bachelor.
