Understanding F1 Scoring in 2025: A Guide for Newcomers

Formula 1 can be a complex sport for newcomers to understand, with its unique rules and scoring system. As the Hungarian Grand Prix approaches, it's essential to grasp how F1 scoring works in 2025. In each race, only the top 10 drivers receive points, with the winner getting 25 points, second place 18, and third place 15. This system encourages aggressive racing and adds excitement for fans as drivers battle for the championship title.
Previously, an extra point was awarded for the fastest lap, but this was removed for the 2025 season. Races that are 75% complete follow the regular scoring system, while those ending prematurely have a reduced scoring system based on race completion percentage. Sprint events also offer points to the top eight drivers, but the points awarded are lower compared to Grand Prix races.
At the end of the season, the driver with the most points wins the Drivers' Championship, while the team with the most points overall claims the Constructors' Championship. This dual championship system adds an extra layer of competition, as seen in the previous season where Max Verstappen won the Drivers' Championship, but McLaren secured the Constructors' Championship with a higher total points tally.
