Visa Denial Disappoints Venezuelan Little League Team at Senior League World Series
The Senior League World Series championship, a tournament for Little Leaguers aged 13 to 16 from around the globe, is taking place today in Easly, South Carolina. Unfortunately, the Cacique Mara team from Maracaibo, Venezuela, was unable to participate as they were denied travel visas to the United States. The team had emerged victorious in the Latin American qualifier rounds held in Mexico last month.
In June, President Trump issued a proclamation that restricted or partially restricted citizens from 19 countries, including Afghanistan, Cuba, Iran, and Venezuela, from entering the U.S. due to national security concerns. However, exceptions were made for athletes participating in major sporting events like the World Cup or the Olympics, as determined by the secretary of state.
The reasons behind the denial of travel visas to the Venezuelan team remain unclear. The State Department mentioned that they have a policy to grant national interest exceptions to qualified travelers participating in such sporting events on a case-by-case basis. They advised applicants to apply well in advance of their travel date due to the additional processing time required.
The president of the Cacique Mara Little League, Kendry Gutiérrez, expressed that the players are disheartened by the situation. He emphasized that the team consists of 15-year-old kids who are passionate about baseball and pose no threat. The team's main goal was to compete and win the championship.
The decision to prevent these young athletes from participating in a major sporting event raises concerns about the future participation of athletes from countries like Iran, Cuba, and Venezuela in events like the 2026 World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics. While two other Venezuelan Little League teams were granted visas, the denial faced by the Cacique Mara team is puzzling.
International sports competitions are known for fostering respect and unity across borders. Therefore, the refusal to grant visas to the Cacique Mara team, who were eager to showcase their skills and passion for baseball, is difficult to comprehend. It is a missed opportunity for these Venezuelan youngsters to engage in a game they love on an international stage.
