Damian Lillard Returns to College Roots as General Manager for Weber State Men's Basketball
Damian Lillard, the star guard for the Portland Trail Blazers, has taken on a new role with his former college team, the Weber State Wildcats. Recently announced as the new general manager of the Weber State Men’s Basketball program, Lillard will be working closely with the coaching staff and athletic department to provide mentorship and guidance based on his collegiate and professional experience. Lillard, who played for the Wildcats from 2008 to 2012 and had his jersey retired by the university in 2017, expressed his excitement about returning to his college roots in a leadership capacity.
Due to an injury that will keep him off the court for the upcoming season, Lillard's new role with Weber State comes at a time when he will have more availability in his schedule. The 36-year-old guard is expected to make his return to the NBA court in the 2026-2027 season, barring any setbacks. Before his professional career, Lillard was a standout player for the Weber State men’s basketball team, leaving as the program’s second-leading scorer of all time.
Drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers as the 6th overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, Lillard played for the team from 2012 to 2023. He was later recognized as one of the NBA’s 75 greatest players in history in 2022. Following his time with the Trail Blazers, Lillard joined the Milwaukee Bucks in 2023 and played in 131 games over two seasons before a season-ending Achilles injury in 2025.
After his injury, Lillard's contract with the Bucks was stretched out to buy him out, leading him to return to his hometown team, the Trail Blazers. With his new role at Weber State and his focus on recovery, Lillard is looking forward to making an impact both on and off the court.
