Exploring the Alternate Ending for Qui-Gon Jinn in Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace
In a galaxy not so distant, Liam Neeson faced disappointment with his portrayal of Qui-Gon Jinn in Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace. The actor felt that his character, a Master Jedi, was deceived during a lightsaber duel, leading to a lackluster demise. Despite this, Neeson reflected positively on the filming experience and later reunited with Ewan McGregor in the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi, where he enjoyed revisiting his character.
During the 25th anniversary of the prequel, it was revealed that George Lucas had a different, more poignant ending in mind. The original concept involved Neeson's character, Qui-Gon, taking on the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi from the beginning, with McGregor as his Padawan. This alternate ending would have seen Qui-Gon defeating Darth Maul and assuming the name of Obi-Wan as his Master passed away, setting the stage for the events that followed in the Star Wars saga.
While the proposed ending would have provided a shocking twist, the ultimate outcome remained the same, with McGregor's Obi-Wan going on to train Anakin Skywalker and, eventually, Luke Skywalker in the original trilogy.
