Road Closures and Diversions Alert for Liverpool John Lennon Airport and East Lancs Road Upgrades

Drivers heading to Liverpool John Lennon Airport next weekend should be aware of planned road closures and diversions that may cause significant delays. The airport announced that essential carriageway maintenance works will be taking place on the A561 and A562 roads in South Liverpool on August 9-10 and August 16-17. A signposted diversion will be in place, but it could add around 13 miles to the journey, so passengers are advised to allow extra time for travel.

In addition to the airport road closures, a four-month roadworks project will commence on the East Lancs Road starting on August 9. The construction is part of a multi-million pound upgrade to the region's electricity network by SP Energy Networks. The works will involve lane closures on the eastbound side of the East Lancashire Road between the substation near South Boundary Road and the M57 Junction 5 exit slip road, with work scheduled to continue until December 8, 2025.

The upgrades to the electricity network are necessary to meet the increasing demand for electric cars and greener heating. Workers will be replacing old cables with new ones and installing new cable ducts along the network. While some disruption is expected, the local council has assured that access to homes and businesses will be maintained, and electricity supply will not be affected during the construction process.

Drivers are advised to check for updates on the Knowsley Council website for any changes to the road closure dates and times. It is recommended to plan ahead and allow extra time for travel to avoid delays when heading to Liverpool John Lennon Airport or using the East Lancs Road during the construction period.
