Sergino Dest Shines in PSV's Johan Cruyff Shield Victory: A Comeback Story

Sergino Dest made a triumphant return to the starting lineup for PSV in their first competitive match of the season, scoring the game-winning goal to help the team secure the Johan Cruyff Shield by defeating Go Ahead Eagles 2-1. Dest's decisive goal came in the 84th minute when he made a skillful run up the right flank into the box and struck the ball with his left foot, curling it into the bottom corner of the net. This victory marked a comeback for PSV, who scored two late goals to claim the trophy that pits the Dutch KNVB Cup winners against the Eredivisie Champions before the start of the domestic campaign.
Fellow U.S. international Ricardo Pepi also played a role in the match, coming off the bench in the 62nd minute to help PSV secure the win. Dest had missed a significant portion of the previous season due to an ACL tear but made his return to action in March. Despite facing some setbacks during the spring and summer, including missing out on the 2025 Gold Cup with the USMNT, Dest showcased his skills in preseason friendlies before making his competitive appearance in the Johan Cruyff Shield match.
With his return to form, Dest could become a key player for the USMNT under manager Mauricio Pochettino as they prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Having already earned 32 international caps, scoring two goals and providing five assists, Dest was part of the 2022 FIFA World Cup squad and will look to make an impact in future competitions. PSV will kick off their Eredivisie campaign against Sparta Rotterdam on August 9, aiming to secure their third consecutive league title.
