He will be playing the role of Scotty Bristol, the host of the fictional late-night show "Way Late with Scotty Bristol." The episode featuring Colbert was filmed recently, and details about his character's connection to the murder case of the week are still unknown. Colbert's appearance on Elsbeth is believed to have stemmed from a promise made by Wendell Pierce during his guest appearance on The Late Show with Colbert in February. Pierce assured Colbert that he could make his wish of appearing on a crime drama come true, leading to Colbert's role on Elsbeth. The role of Scotty Bristol was reportedly written specifically for Colbert, and despite the news of Colbert's departure from The Late Show, the original plan to have him on Elsbeth proceeded as planned.
