Steven Wilson's Spatial Audio Remixes of Guns N' Roses Albums Shelved: The Future of Immersive Music Experiences

Steven Wilson, the frontman of Porcupine Tree, has revealed that his spatial audio remixes of Guns N’ Roses albums 'Use Your Illusion I' and 'Use Your Illusion II' have been shelved by the band. Despite remixing nearly 40 songs, including outtakes and B-sides, the band did not approve of the work. Wilson expressed disappointment that the project remains unreleased and unheard due to the band's veto of the Dolby Atmos technology and spatial audio concept. He also discussed the potential for spatial audio technology in live music settings, highlighting the challenges and opportunities it presents for immersive experiences.
Wilson's interest in spatial audio mixes extends beyond his work with Guns N’ Roses, as he envisions the technology evolving to enhance live music performances. While discussing the possibilities of Atmos sound and the integration of spatial audio in venues like The Sphere in Las Vegas, Wilson emphasized the potential for artists to create more immersive shows for audiences. He sees the adoption of spatial audio in more venues as a step towards advancing the live music experience and hopes for progress in this area in the coming years.
In addition to his spatial audio projects, Wilson released his eighth studio album 'The Overview' earlier this year, featuring two 20-minute tracks. The album's release coincided with Playboi Carti's fourth LP 'Music', which topped the charts, preventing Wilson from achieving his first Number One album. Despite the chart battle, Wilson expressed surprise at the rapper's popularity and the lack of awareness about him among people he has encountered.
