From Baseball to NASCAR: Bristol Motor Speedway's Transformation for the Playoffs
After the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds finished their baseball game at Bristol Motor Speedway, the venue had to quickly transition back to its racing roots to prepare for NASCAR's upcoming playoff chase race on September 13. Speedway Motorsports' senior vice president of operations, Steve Swift, explained that the transformation process involves dismantling the baseball setup and rebuilding the pit walls to ensure a smooth transition for the NASCAR event.
The MLB Speedway Classic at Bristol Motor Speedway featured custom-built clubhouses for the teams, complete with all necessary facilities. The grandstands along the base lines and broadcast booths were also set up for the baseball game. Now, the focus is on reconstructing the pit walls and other infrastructure to accommodate the NASCAR race.
The transition from a baseball diamond to a racing track requires meticulous planning and coordination with various partners. Despite the challenges involved, Swift expressed enthusiasm for the process, emphasizing the team's readiness to tackle the task at hand. The infield transformation involved significant amounts of gravel and clay to create the playing surface for the baseball game.
Once the baseball setup is removed, materials like gravel and wood from the grandstands will be recycled for other purposes. Bristol Motor Speedway plans to donate some materials to aid in hurricane recovery efforts and utilize the rest for future projects. The renovation schedule includes built-in buffer days to ensure completion by September 7, with a backup plan in place for any unforeseen delays.
Looking ahead, Bristol Motor Speedway is open to hosting other sporting events, such as outdoor hockey games, following the success of the MLB Speedway Classic.
