New York Islanders Sign Top Prospect Matthew Schaefer to Three-Year Entry-Level Contract

The New York Islanders have officially signed defenseman Matthew Schaefer to a three-year entry-level contract. Schaefer was the first overall pick by the Islanders in the 2025 National Hockey League Draft, marking the fifth time in franchise history that the team has selected first overall and the first time since 2009. The 17-year-old defenseman hails from Stoney Creek, ON and had an impressive season with the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), recording 22 points with a +21 rating in just 17 games. Unfortunately, his season was cut short due to an injury sustained at the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship while playing for Team Canada.

During his two seasons with the Erie Otters, Schaefer has accumulated 39 points, showcasing his offensive capabilities with 10 goals and 29 assists in 73 games. In the 2023-24 season, he tallied 17 points in 56 games and contributed three assists in the 2024 OHL Playoffs. On the international stage, Schaefer has already made a name for himself, winning gold medals with Team Canada at the 2024 Hlinka Gretzky Cup and the 2024 IIHF World Under-18 Championship. He also had the honor of captaining Team Canada at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup and contributed six points in five games.

In conclusion, the New York Islanders have secured a promising young talent in Matthew Schaefer, who has already proven himself both in the OHL and on the international stage. With his offensive skills and leadership qualities, Schaefer is poised to make a significant impact on the Islanders' roster in the coming seasons.
