Exploring Truths: A Look at TIFF's 50th Edition Docs Program

The Toronto International Film Festival's Docs program for its 50th edition will showcase 23 feature documentaries from 18 countries. The program will kick off with the world premiere of Ben Proudfoot's "The Eyes of Ghana," produced by Barack and Michelle Obama's Higher Ground, which follows cinematographer Chris Hesse's work with Ghana's first president. Laura Poitras and Mark Obenhaus's "Cover Up" will make its Canadian premiere, focusing on journalist Seymour Hersh's investigative reporting on constitutional wrongdoings. National Geographic will distribute Jimmy Chin and Chai Vasarhelyi's "LOVE+WAR," exploring photojournalist Lynsey Addario's career. Sepideh Farsi's "Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk" tells the story of Gaza photojournalist Fatma Hassona, while Raoul Peck's "Orwell: 2+2=5" delves into the life of author George Orwell.

Other documentaries in the lineup include John Dower's "The Balloonists," Tasha Van Zandt's "A Life Illuminated," Christopher Nelius's "Whistle," Lorena Luciano's "Nuns vs. the Vatican," Billy Corben's "Canceled: The Paula Deen Story," and Nicole Bazuin's "Modern Whore." Despite challenges in documentary distribution, TIFF's documentary programmer Thom Powers selected the final 23 films from over 1,000 submissions, highlighting the undiminished spirit of documentary filmmaking. The lineup joins other documentaries in the gala and platform programs, offering a diverse range of stories and perspectives for audiences to explore at the festival.
