Empowering Girls Through Sports: The Impact of the 'Keep Her In the Game' Initiative
Ali Krieger, a two-time FIFA Women's World Cup champion, emphasized the importance of playing multiple sports during her upbringing. She believes that engaging in various sports not only helps develop different skills but also prevents burnout among athletes. Recognizing the high dropout rate of girls in sports by age 14, Gotham FC partnered with Dove on the "Keep Her In the Game" initiative. As part of this collaboration, Rebel Girls Sports introduced a book titled "Changing the Game: A Playbook for Champions in Training," which aims to inspire young girls to stay active in sports and reach their full potential.
The book features personal stories from notable athletes like NWSL MVP frontrunner Esther Gotham, Gotham FC's Midge Purce, and Rose Lavelle, who share their struggles and setbacks in their athletic journeys. Yael Averbuch West, the general manager of Gotham FC, highlights her transition from a player to a front office role as a testament to success beyond the field. The program has already attracted over 1,700 members, with a significant number attending Gotham FC games and engaging with the players.
Krieger emphasized the players' commitment to connecting with fans, whether through creating campaigns, signing autographs, or engaging in post-game interactions. The "Keep Her In the Game" program aims to have a lasting impact on young girls, inspiring them to pursue various opportunities in sports, leadership, and decision-making roles. By fostering a love for the game that extends beyond the field, Gotham FC hopes to empower the next generation of female athletes and leaders.
