Sheffield Wednesday Football Club was established in 1867 as an extension of the Wednesday Cricket Club. The club's name was derived from the fact that its members often had Wednesdays off work. The cricket club, believed to have originated in 1820 or possibly as early as 1816, played on Wednesdays, while the football team was formed to keep the members fit during the winter months. The football team officially came together in September 1867 and played its first match in October of the same year.
As the football team gained popularity, it eventually outshone the cricket club, leading to their formal separation in 1882. Sheffield Wednesday joined the Football League in 1892 and was one of the founding members of the Premier League in 1992. Since becoming part of the Football League, the club has consistently competed in England's top three divisions.
