Sandown Park: Celebrating 150 Years of Racing History Exhibition
A museum exhibition is currently showcasing the 150-year history of Sandown Park, a renowned racecourse in Esher, Surrey. The exhibition delves into the origins of the racecourse, its royal connections, and its role in shaping modern horse racing. Located at the House of Killik on Esher High Street, the exhibition will be open to the public until 31 October.
Sandown Park, established in 1875, was the first purpose-built racecourse to introduce paid admission and enclosures, setting a new standard in the industry. Throughout its history, the racecourse played a significant role during World War One and Two, supporting war efforts by sowing crops and accommodating military personnel. In 1948, Sandown Park made history by hosting the first televised horse race, paving the way for future broadcasting of horse racing events.
Over the years, Sandown Park has continued to innovate, hosting the first sponsored race in British history in 1957. Today, the venue not only hosts horse racing events but also music concerts, exhibitions, and features its own golf course. The exhibition, created in collaboration with Elmbridge Museum, aims to celebrate the racecourse's rich heritage and the communities that have been part of its story for the past 150 years.
Visitors to the exhibition will have the opportunity to explore the fascinating history and legacy of Sandown Park, while also supporting a charitable cause. Proceeds from the exhibition will go towards The Community Fund, a new charity dedicated to funding projects in Elmbridge. The exhibition offers a unique insight into the racecourse's evolution and its enduring significance in the world of horse racing.
