Revitalizing Horse Racing in Berbice: President Ali's Vision for a World-Class Facility

President Dr. Irfaan Ali recently announced plans to construct a state-of-the-art horse racing track in the Berbice region during a People’s Progressive Party/Civic rally in Bath, Region Five. Emphasizing the region's rich history in horse racing, the President pledged to create a world-class facility to support the sport and enhance community development efforts. This initiative reflects the growing popularity of horse racing in the country and aims to provide a family-friendly environment for enthusiasts.

The commitment to building a new horse racing track in Berbice follows calls from prominent horse owner Therbhuwan ‘Turbo’ Jagdeo for an all-weather track to modernize the sport. The government has already taken steps to revamp the industry's administration, with Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sport, Charles Ramson Jr., introducing the Horse Racing Authority Bill in Parliament in December 2024. This proposed legislation seeks to streamline the industry by addressing violations, expanding the Authority's membership, introducing term limits, and implementing licensing requirements for owners, jockeys, and trainers.

Guyana's horse racing scene has seen a surge in competitive success, with locally-owned horses performing exceptionally well in regional races. The upcoming Guyana Cup, the country's premier horse racing event scheduled for August 17 at the Rising Sun Turf Club, is expected to further showcase the talent and passion for the sport in Guyana. The momentum in the industry underscores the government's commitment to supporting and enhancing horse racing in the country, paving the way for a vibrant and thriving equestrian community.
