Preventing Tragic Accidents: The Dangers of Illegal Street Racing on Highway 99

A 26-year-old man from Citrus Heights was seriously injured in a car accident on Highway 99 during an alleged illegal street race. The incident occurred on the northbound side of the highway, north of Beckwith Road. The driver of a Corvette, Tyler K. Azadzoi, was racing a black Ford Mustang at speeds exceeding 100 mph. Azadzoi lost control of his vehicle, veered into the center median, crossed all northbound lanes, hit a chain link fence, and overturned multiple times before coming to a stop on Sisk Road.
Azadzoi, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the Corvette and sustained major injuries. His passenger, Ayesha Malik, 28, from Richmond, suffered minor injuries. The driver of the Mustang, Raul Torres Jr., 22, from Manteca, initially stopped at the scene but left before law enforcement arrived. Torres was later arrested at his home and faces multiple charges, including reckless driving causing bodily injury, speed contest causing injury, reckless driving, engaging in a speed contest, and driving without a license.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating the incident and urging drivers to avoid illegal street racing, which poses serious risks to participants and others on the road. Street racing is not only illegal but also endangers lives and can result in severe injuries or fatalities. It is essential for all drivers to prioritize safety, obey traffic laws, and avoid engaging in reckless behavior behind the wheel. Let's work together to promote responsible driving practices and prevent tragic accidents like this one.
